Treating TD

There are treatments available for low testosterone

This is a disease awareness campaign initiated and funded by Grünenthal for the UK general public.

How can testosterone deficiency be treated?

Only your doctor can properly confirm is you have low levels of testosterone.

Once a diagnosis is confirmed and the decision is taken to treat, treatment of low testosterone is relatively straightforward.

Your doctor will recommend lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating (for example reduced intake of processed foods such as cereals and desserts, and increased intake of vegetables and berries) and more regular exercise.

Beyond lifestyle changes, there are a few medication options, that are effective at elevating testosterone levels (Testosterone Replacement Therapy or TRT).

However, Testosterone Therapy requires a doctor’s prescription, and regular medical reviews to check on the safety profile and effectiveness of the therapy.

If testosterone therapy is right for you, your doctor will suggest suitable treatment options, ranging from injections, to gels/creams.

Health and well-being – quality of life

Effective Testosterone Replacement Therapy, in men with low testosterone, can improve quality of life through improvements of typical symptoms such as sexual problems, physical functioning, vitality and depressive moods. These symptoms can be expected to improve over time and will show you whether the treatment is working effectively.

Body composition

Effective Testosterone Replacement Therapy in men with low testosterone, combined with lifestyle interventions (e.g., diet and exercise) may lead to increased lean body mass and strength and decreased fat mass.

Bone Density

Low testosterone can lead to thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) and men with hip fractures tend to have low testosterone. Effective Testosterone Replacement Therapy, in men with low testosterone, may lead to increased bone density.

If low testosterone occurs during adulthood, you can make some lifestyle and dietary changes to help prevent osteoporosis. Regular exercise and adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D help to maintain bone strength and are important to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
