Frequently asked questions about testosterone deficiency

What can cause low testosterone?

Low testosterone can be caused by a number of factors. Common causes include obesity , chronic stress, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and the use of certain medications. Low testosterone may also be the result of head injury, or damage to the testicles (caused by for example illness, injury or sport).

How can I tell if I have low testosterone?

You may have low testosterone If you are experiencing increased body fat, especially belly fat, low mood, decreased muscle mass, weakness and fatigue. If you rarely feel in the mood for sex, or have difficulty getting an erection, you may have low testosterone.

However, low testosterone is often ignored by men experiencing such symptoms because they think they are just getting old. It is best to speak to your doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Taking the Ageing Males Symptoms (AMS) test will give you some more information if you are concerned after reading this.

How can I help boost my testosterone levels?

Improvements in overall health could help to boost naturally occurring levels of testosterone. Try and maintain a healthy weight by staying active and eating a healthy diet which will help in improving your overall wellbeing. Some symptoms you are experiencing may not be due to low testosterone levels and your GP will be able to advise you more.

Reducing your stress levels, cutting down on alcohol, stopping smoking and getting enough rest are also important to do.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is available on prescription. Please discuss these options with your doctor if you are concerned that you may need Testosterone Replacement Therapy
